Learner Spotlight

Recently, during a BTEC sports lesson, the learners had been planning and executing a training plan to hit their own specific targets and goals. This resulted in the boys engaging in some great, inventive workouts; which lead to them achieving the targets they had set themselves, facilitated by both self-motivation and encouragement from each other. This created a fantastic team atmosphere during the lesson and it taught the learners invaluable skills that they will be able to transfer into their daily lives and their futures.

One learner who showed this in abundance was Jordan. During the workouts Jordan was very encouraging to the other learners giving them motivation and support through the kind, positive words he used and then demonstrating parts of the workout for them to then try themselves. Jordan was not asked by staff to do this. He did this of his own volition. He saw his peer’s struggling and immediately took on the role of a supporter. This not only showed kindness but also that Jordan can stay calm when helping people through what can be a very difficult obstacle to overcome.
Jordan’s efforts and skills during that lesson, helped him to achieve multiple key stage 4, personal passport targets; including: ‘being kind and calm to others’, ‘taking on more responsibilities’, ‘following social cues’ and ‘ show the use of non-verbal communication confidently and competently’. All of these skills and attitudes not only benefitted his peers by helping them to overcome obstacles but will personally benefit Jordan in the future and his aspiration of joining the Navy.
