Music Therapy Informed Activities at the Sanctuary

At the Sanctuary, we have been learning to play Ocarinas. Learners choose a coloured ocarina of their choice and learn to control their breathing and use their fine motor skills to play. At the moment, we have been learning the 8 notes of the scale and practising rhythms through play.

We also play games with music while outside during fire drills where different sounds tell learners which actions to do, to run fast on the spot, to dance and to freeze. These activities ensure our learners are safe and remain at the fire point.

Boomwhackers are a way to play music as a class, our current favourite is Imagine Dragons Believers. Each learner takes a different boomwhacker and we play with the background music on! Learners must work together to make the song sound complete. Boomwhacker songs can be used interchangeably with boomwhackers! Learners sometimes make up their own pieces of music and use different colours to symbolise different notes.

Next week, we have planned to take a mic into the forest to record the sounds of nature and listen to them back at the Sanctuary.
