Creative Careers

GCSE Art and Design Learners from across our pathways participated in a virtual careers event hosted by NE1 Can. Carol Bell, Creative England strategic lead for North of the Tyne introduced Learners to the facts and figures around the employment in the creative industries stating that over 2 million people are employed in this sector, with a further 1 million in support and HR roles. Prior to COVID-19 this was one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK.
Learners participated in talks from creatives from multi discipline backgrounds such as;
- Julie- Interior designer for the hospitality industry
- PR coordinator from Gardiner Richardson
- Will - freelance illustrator
- Architects from Ryder
- Katie- Northern Film and Music
All employers gave a brief outline of their work to show Learners what they can expect from a typical day in the office and well as talking about the pros and cons of the role.
Learners identified during talks that there were many skills need in order to be successful in the industry which included;
- Good communication
- Creativity
- Adaptability
- Working to deadlines
- Passion and proactivity
From these talks Learner then formed discussions about how they felt they would fit in each company and talked about where they see themselves in the creative industry. The talk was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
