Celebrating Bridging the Gap

At the end of November 2020 the school, like many others, were given a budget to offer catch up interventions for various learners in English and Maths with the goal of getting learners back at their target grade. Since taking on this role as Academic Mentor it has been challenging but massively rewarding; for both pupils and myself alike. With the wealth of support from subject-specific teachers, we implemented plans and identified gaps in learning to ensure sessions were relevant and effective. The main focus has been on GCSEs; specifically working on past papers across English and Maths which has resulted in intervention sessions being solely focused on assessment objective criteria but also building confidence. Without dwelling too much on the reasons behind the revised grading strategy it would be fair to say that everyone has found the change a challenging one. Despite the shake up the students have taken this in their stride and engaged fantastically, with most bridging the gap and returning to their lessons on target.

After a sporadic year that has raised lots of questions, the staff and learners can be proud of the adversity they have endured and the hard work I have seen first-hand: definitely raising course for celebration.
