How far would you go for an apple?

This week key Stage 3 are making apple crumble in their Food Technology lessons. They were surprised to learn that there are over 7,000 different varieties of apples grown across the World.

In the background of climate change, we are becoming increasingly aware of the carbon footprint of our food. In a simple experiment, this week learners are sampling three varieties of apple and estimating the food miles incurred by each one. They compared flavour and appearance of each before estimating how far the apple had travelled from grower to store. They concluded that they could buy apples grown in the UK that were every bit as delicious as any from Europe and beyond.
