Fresh Trims on Trinity farm

Summer is officially here! Last week the farm had a visit from Jonathan Waters who came to shear all the Alpacas. Jonathan worked with Ellie to shear all ten of our alpacas. They collected eight large bags of wool, some of which we’re hoping to use for an art project.
Even though Alpacas have become much more popular in the UK in the last few years there aren’t many schools that have their own herd, here are some facts about Trinity Academy farm’s most unusual residents:
- Alpacas belong to the Camelidae family which includes Llamas and Camels.
- Male alpacas are called Machos, Females are Hembras and the babies are called Crias.
- Alpacas can live more than 20 years.
- Alpacas originate from South America where they are bred for their wool.
- They are a completely domesticated animal, there are no wild alpacas.
- There are 52 different colour variations of alpaca wool.
Their wool is hypoallergenic, waterproof and flameproof!
