On Yer Bike!

Outdoor Education pathway pedalled in the right directions to begin a new module of the programme - Basic Bicycle Maintenance.

Into the bike storage we went and pulled out the mountain bikes, to learn about components, how the gears work, which cable goes to which brake before moving on to checking what we need to be looking at, to get these bikes on the road, well off road!

After identifying which bikes to look at this afternoon, the first task was to assemble the maintenance stand correctly, and safely. Then once this was completed, to lift the bikes one by one, and clamp them in the stand to check them over. The learners took it in turn to check brakes, changing gears, the quality of the tyres and chains.

There is some work to be done, and this was an excellent start. One of the challenges 2 of our group will be set, is learning to ride a bike! Challenge accepted, as one put it, "I'll have to give it a go"!

That's the spirit.
