Literacy Highlights
At the Sanctuary we know how important reading is. It is important for life but also for pleasure – how else would we be able to sing karaoke or read the instructions when baking a cake?
We encourage every learner to read for pleasure outside of lesson time, and sometimes you might see staff and learners reading for pleasure alongside each other. Staff and learners have been designing their classrooms to include special spaces for reading which includes somewhere comfortable to sit, lots of books and maybe even some musical instruments. Learners are responsible for making sure the reading area is respected and always tidied afterward.
An example of one of The Sanctuary’s lovely reading spaces. As you can see, there is a good selection of books to read and enjoy. You might also spot some our favourite books by famous author Roald Dahl. His books include Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Fantastic Mr Fox and who could forget James and the Giant Peach. What's your favourite book?
We have enjoyed reading Roald Dahl’s books so much that we have found out some fascinating facts about him:
- He had a little brick shed especially built at the bottom of the garden for him to do all his writing in. He worked on his books from 10.30am until 12pm then in the afternoon he worked from 4pm until 6pm.
- He only ever wrote in a yellow pencil with a rubber on the end.
- He always had 6 pencils available and they lasted 2 hours each.
We would like to congratulate our learners who have worked hard on literacy this term, they have read different types of text including newspapers and also given their opinions on pieces of text. We have been wowed!
